Beyond the stereotypical buttery Chardonnay, big oaky Cabernets and luscious Pinot Noir, there lies an adventurous and compelling world of California wine. Spearheaded by winemakers who are farming forgotten or underappreciated varietals from vineyards in less-esteemed wine growing regions, embracing low technology winemaking methods with minimal intervention, and leaning into stylistic preferences that value freshness and vivacity over richness and power. This cadre of winemakers could collectively be said to comprise the new California wine scene.
