Phil '73 and Mimi '75 Frengs
Racing to End Alzheimer’s Foundation, formed by Phil Frengs '73, is expanding this year, presenting "18 to Remember", an LPGA Pro-Am golf tournament on Monday, April 25, preceding the LPGA’s JTBC Championship at Palos Verdes Golf Club. A limited field will play with LPGA professionals who are UCLA Alumni. All proceeds from the LPGA Pro-Am will be directed to UCLA’s Alzheimer's and Dementia Care (ADC) program.
Frengs formed the foundation for an extremely personal reason — one very close to his heart. When his wife, Mimi Scofield Frengs '75, had been diagnosed with dementia, the couple turned to UCLA Health for assistance. A study of her condition by Dr. Mario Mendez’s Focal-type Dementia Clinic and Program concluded that she had early-onset Alzheimer’s disease.
Feeling hopeless, Frengs also felt the need to do something constructive. He formed Racing to End Alzheimer’s, based on his love for (and sponsorship of) a national auto racing team. He figured he could use motorsports as a platform to increase awareness about Alzheimer’s, and to create funding for institutions who support the patients and their families who are affected by this awful disease.
The addition of the tournament is a logical extension of the Foundation's footprint, given that Frengs is an avid golfer and longtime supporter of the UCLA Women's Golf team. It will feature 10 LPGA players, all of whom started their careers at UCLA. The organizers are looking for both amateur players and tournament sponsors.
