Raymond Bell '78
Raymond Bell '78, executive producer of "Called Up: The Emmett Ashford Story," the story of the first African American umpire in Major League Baseball, was interviewed by the History Channel Podcast. The podcast, which also features the film's producer/director Doug Harris, Ashford's daughter Adrienne Bratton and sports historian Mark Armour, integrates the interviews and soundbites from the documentary to tell the story of Ashford's journey to the Major Leagues.
A native of Los Angeles, Ashford was an American League umpire from 1966 through 1970, working the 1967 All-Star Game in Anaheim and the 1970 World Series.
