David GreenwoodNational Collegiate Basketball Hall of Famer David Greenwood '79, a two-time first-team All America selection — and the second overall pick in the NBA draft that saw Magic Johnson selected first — passed away June 8 after battling cancer. He was 68.

Greenberg came to UCLA from Verbum Dei High School in Los Angeles, having been recruited by John Wooden and arriving just after Wooden retired in 1975. A 6'9"-inch forward, he was a four-year starter, averaging 14.8 points and 8.7 rebounds per game while earning his bachelor's degree in history. He was an all-conference selection in his last three years and earned team MVP honors as a junior and senior, when he became UCLA's first back-to-back first-team All-America selection since Bill Walton (1972-74).

During his rookie NBA season (1979-80), he averaged 16.3 points and 9.4 rebounds per game with Chicago. In his 11th NBA season, Greenwood helped Detroit win its second consecutive NBA Finals in 1990. He retired after the following season.

Greenwood later coached at his high school, Verbum Dei, leading the Eagles' basketball program to CIF State Division IV championships in 1998 and 1999.

Greenwood is survived by his brother, Al; his sister, Laverne; his son, Jemil; and his daughter, Tiffany, along with his former wife, Joyce.

A visitation for Greenwood will be held Friday, June 27, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Pierce Brothers Crestlawn Mortuary, 11500 Arlington Ave., Riverside, CA 92505. Following the visitation will be a funeral service from 7 to 9 p.m. at the same location.
