A.P. Gonzales
A.P. Gonzales teaches screenwriting, production, directing, and editing in the masters of fine arts program, where some 600 applicants compete for 21 positions each year.
During his tenure at UCLA, A.P. has also restructured undergraduate curriculum in film, television and digital media, transforming it into one of the nation’s top-ranked university programs. One course in particular bears his trademark – the program’s film editing course, taught in the same way, with the same material, since the late ’50s. The course material was a scene from the television western Gunsmoke. A.P. rethought the course, asking students to reach out and use their imagination and talent to shoot and edit their own scene.
He has also been a leading force in the creation of the Chicano/Latino Film and Television Association, which enables students to explore their art and heritage through film festivals, workshops and special events.
