Graduating this June with a perfect 4.0 GPA in civil engineering, Emily has been a director and coach for the UCLA Special Olympics program and has participated in project Angel Food, which delivers hot meals to members of the Los Angeles AIDS community.

However, Emily receives this award for stellar achievement in her chosen field. Ranking as the top student in many of her engineering classes, she is described by many of her professors as “the best and brightest undergraduate student I have ever taught.”

Emily specializes in the structures area of the civil and environmental engineering program and has investigated soil liquefaction associated with the 1999 Taiwan earthquake. Jonathan Stewart of the school of engineering writes, “There are very few students that I would feel comfortable sending to a foreign country to perform this research. Emily is that rare student.”

She has also helped to enhance UCLA’s academic program with her leadership role in the student chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineers.
