Howard Suber’s encyclopedic overview of media has broadened film study and bridged the connection between media and other disciplines, such as art, psychology, history and sociology. He has taught an extraordinary range of courses, but it is his graduate seminars which are remarkable for the range and depth of knowledge they explore. Suber challenges his students with tough assignments, but his former students describe him as their mentor and model. With wisdom, knowledge and good humor, he encourages his students in and out of the classroom. As one student wrote, “If the Distinguished Teaching Award is meant to honor a professor who breathes life into his subject, and whose compassion for students is matched only by his intellectual prowess, there can be no more deserving recipient than Professor Suber.”
