John J. Stuppy Ph.D. ’94
John Stuppy is clearly an individual whose considerable intellectual gifts and humanitarian imperatives have been joined to the very timely benefit of the UCLA community as well as the Los Angeles community at large. The only student in his division to receive honors in his Doctoral Comprehensive Qualifying Written Examination in the UCLA Graduate School of Education , Stuppy will complete his doctoral degree in just two years. He was invited to present two papers at the International Conference on Technology and Education in London. These papers deal with the use of computers in education and involve important practical issues such as the impact of model technology instructional programs on students and the true costs of maintaining computers in school settings.
Stuppy's service is exemplified by his role as program administrator for the school management program. Utilizing his considerable computer software business experience, he volunteered over 600 hours last year alone to help Project LEARN schools and the Los Angeles Unified School District. In this context, he taught numerous courses, led discussion groups and served on the curriculum design team. He was considered one of LEARN's best instructors.
He is also a family man with a wife and four young children. Despite his workload, he finds time to be a little league and soccer coach, assistant Cubmaster for over 100 Cub Scouts and an elementary school board member.
Through his strong commitment to improving the fields of school management, instructional technology, school administration and communication, Stuppy will continue to help principals, teachers and other school leaders incorporate new models of teaching and learning in and out of classrooms. His knowledge, research and hard work have already clearly and significantly benefitted others.
