An outstanding student who put herself through college with scholarships and part-time jobs, Sonia Lewis has posted an impressive record of service to the UCLA community. Lewis has been an exceptional mathematics tutor with UCLA’s Academic Advancement Program, possessing both the knowledge and the interpersonal skills requires of a successful teacher. Her student and supervisor evaluations were consistently the best among a staff of almost 60.

Lewis’ warmth and energy were also apparent in her role as a residence hall assistant, providing a powerful source of support for students under her care.

A member of the prestigious College of Letters and Science Honors Program, Lewis made outstanding contributions as a student in several Honors Collegium courses. Although majoring in economics and business, Lewis demonstrated a high degree of interest in history and English; among her numerous awards was a summer research stipend to study the literature of three 20th century African American women authors: Zora Neale Hurston, Alice Walker and Toni Morrison.

Lewis’ senior honors thesis examined the economic effects of tenant management and ownership of public housing projects in the United States. The paper showed outstanding initiative and keen economic intuition.

The first in her family to attend college, Sonia Lewis has distinguished herself as a scholar and has become a role model, inspiring many other students with her achievements. For all her dedication and community service, Lewis richly deserves the accolade of Outstanding Senior.
