AAP Highlight: Academic Advancement Learning Pavilion

UCLA's nationally recognized Academic Advancement Program has outgrown Campbell Hall in the heart of north campus due to a significant rise in demand for its services. The nation's largest university-based student diversity program, AAP develops future leaders and scholars who arrive fully qualified at UCLA from inner city or rural high schools that offer few advance placement and enrichment courses. Many AAP students are first in their families to attend college, and come from historically underrepresented groups or low-income families unable to help their students navigate the complex world of higher education.

Serving more than 6,000 students, AAP bridges the gap in educational advantage through services that promote academic excellence while fostering shared learning in a community of scholars. A hallmark of AAP, is its peer-facilitated learning program in which trained peer facilitators lead sessions of three to five students—encouraging critical thinking and intellectual independence through questioning and dialogue.

The rising demand for these services requires the expansion of Campbell Hall, specifically the addition of the Academic Advancement Learning Pavilion. The addition will add specialized learning laboratories, flexible work space, and modules equipped with state-of-the-art technology. And by enclosing the existing patio, the Pavilion will provide essential space for larger meetings and formal presentations.

The Pavilion will transform Campbell Hall into a spacious, innovative facility for the increasing numbers of AAP students who need peer-facilitated learning, graduate school mentoring, and academic, personal and career counseling. The Pavilion will become the hub of activity for AAP students and ensure that UCLA remains responsive to the needs of its diverse student body.
