Gerald H. Oppenheimer
It’s a rare person whose contributions to UCLA encompass the entire spectrum of service and support. Yet for more than 10 years, both the UCLA School of Medicine and the Jules Stein Eye Institute have been profiting from the knowledge, skill, leadership and generosity of Gerald Oppenheimer. As a member of the Stein family, Oppenheimer has been allied with UCLA’s health sciences programs since the mid-1960s. In 1978, however, he cemented that association by helping to create the Hollywood Canteen Loan Fund and Pledge Fund for UCLA School of Medicine students, an accomplishment that proved to be only the beginning of his active involvement at UCLA. Fundraising and philanthropy rank high among his contributions, but he also has given unselfishly of his considerable expertise in computing and administration, working for four years to help computerize the Student Affairs programs in the UCLA School of Medicine.
Oppenheimer’s philanthropic spirit is also a major force in the Los Angeles community, supporting numerous organizations to help the needy, the disabled and the arts. In 1986, the Blind Children’s Center presented him and his wife, Virginia, with a Humanitarian Award.
