Jeffrey Svoboda ’83

Jeffrey Svoboda is a double major in physics and English who has successfully joined the two ‘cultures’ of science and humanities. Rated in the top 1% of students by faculty members, he is often referred to with ‘colleague’ status. His scholastic accolades include his selection as a Regents Scholar, Richard Meeker Scholar and Alumni Scholar and a state Rhodes Scholarship finalist. Svoboda won the Hosmer W. Stone Prize for outstanding achievement in physics, and he was named a standout English major.

Svoboda was a three-year member of the chess team, participating in the last three Pan-American Intercollegiate Championships. This year, he served as captain and president of the club.

Svoboda has been the undergraduate representative to the UCLA English Department Curriculum Committee and a college honors officer. He also volunteered as a tutor for the Prison Coalition and the Neuropsychiatric Institute. Svoboda will attend University of California, Berkeley this fall as a Ph.D. student in physics.
