Career Development Month Calendar 2024

November is National Career Development Month, and the UCLA Alumni Association has resources for you to meet your professional goals. Take part in any (or all) of these challenges throughout the month to make some tangible strides in your job search or career checklist.

  • UCLA ONE - UCLA ONE is UCLA’s exclusive professional networking platform of over 70,000 Bruins. Join this challenge to get your profile ready to mentor, meet Bruins, or share your story.
  • Tell Your Story - Your professional journey is meant to be shared. This challenge helps you put yourself out there to help Bruins, share your successes and learned lessons, and build your professional brand.
  • Connect with Bruins - Your biggest asset is your network, and we all need help strengthening our connections. This challenge helps you take tangible steps to introducing yourself to other Bruins and start the conversation around opportunities and relationships.
  • Take Action - Taking Action is vital to any career. Our career doesn’t just happen to us. This challenge gives practical steps toward identifying your professional goals, and gives you resources to taking the proper steps.

What makes you unique? Learn what makes your personal brand authentic, and how you can incorporate storytelling into developing your brand. Watch
3 - Connect With Bruins - LinkedIn
LinkedIn is a great tool to connect with Bruins. Create a profile or update your profile to reflect your experiences (past and current jobs, interests and goals).
4 - Take Action - Time to Reflect
The first action in any career path is reflecting and asking yourself what you want. Ask yourself these questions to refine your goals.
5- UCLA ONE - Challenge
Say Cheese: Add a profile picture with a professional headshot and show your friendly face!
6 - Tell Your Story - Turning Point
Identify two to three turning points in your life that has led you to where you are today. How did you respond? Listen to this Bruin's pivot story from football athlete to cyborg anthropologist. 
7 - Connect With Bruins - UCLA Alumni LinkedIn Group
Join the UCLA Alumni LinkedIn Group and introduce yourself to the group. Share any goals you may have for reaching out.
8 - Take Action - Résumé
Your résumé is an important aspect of your professional toolkit. Check out the Job Search Starter Kit to find templates and suggestions to get your résumé in top shape.
9 - UCLA ONE - Challenge
Let others know about your academic and career experience on your UCLA ONE profile! This increases the chances of making connections with other Bruins on the platform.
10 - Tell Your Story - Find Your Medium
Your story can be told in different ways! Social media can be a key channel. Explore how you can share your professional journey on UCLA ONE or LinkedIn.
11 - Connect With Bruins - Professional Networking
Find five new connections on UCLA ONE or LinkedIn. Introduce yourself and share why you want to connect. Don’t be discouraged if you don’t hear back. Just find five more new connections.
12 - Take Action - Practice Interviewing
If you haven’t interviewed in a while, practice your skills by answering these top interview questions.
13 - Take Action - Impactful Communication
Learn effective communications strategies from Career Coach Ricky Koo '09 and position yourself as a valuable thought leader. RSVP
14 - Connect With Bruins - Bruins in Seattle
Join UCLA Alumni and the Seattle Network at this alumni career panel exploring how Bruins are driving innovation and impact in their companies. RSVP
15 - UCLA ONE - Challenge
Post on the UCLA ONE feed a one- to three-sentence introduction about yourself, clearly indicating how you’d like to offer or seek support on the platform.
16 - Tell Your Story - Bruin Success Podcast
Explore the Bruin Success Podcast and hear from Bruins in a variety of industries share their journeys, like our Lambda alumni.
17 - Connect With Bruins - Attend an Event
Get out of the house and meet someone IRL (in real life). Check out the UCLA Alumni Association’s event calendar for UCLA events happening near you.
18 - Take Action - Informational Interviews
Informational interviews are some of the best tools to clarify your next steps. Reach out to alumni on UCLA ONE to request an interview.
19 - Take Action - Your Professional Legacy
Join Emily Baxt (Turner) '92, career coach and leadership development consultant, for this interactive workshop to create a cohesive career narrative and determine your next steps.
21 - Connect With Bruins - Alumni Networks
UCLA Alumni Networks are local alumni groups that meet and gather in your local area. Explore the list of active networks and check out upcoming events.
22 - Take Action - Find a Job
Identify five jobs that you would be interested in applying to. Look at keywords and tailor your résumés with these roles.
23 - UCLA ONE - Challenge
Use the "Directory" feature on the left panel to find Bruins in your relevant field. Send them a friendly message indicating why you’re interested in them specifically, and schedule a coffee, phone or video chat!
24 - Tell Your Story - Bruin Spotlights
Bruin Spotlights share our alumni stories. Read two that interest you and see how their career journeys shaped their lives. Are there any common themes or actions that can be applied to your life?
25 - Connect With Bruins - Reconnect
The best network you have is the one you have already. Hear how the relationships and experiences of these Bruins led them to their current roles today. 
26 - Take Action - Submit That Application
You’ll never get a new opportunity if you don’t apply. Whether it’s a job, a scholarship or volunteer opportunity, send in that application. Make a change to elevate your career.
27 - UCLA ONE - Challenge
Find your people. Join a group on UCLA ONE relevant to your field/interest! You can find the "Groups" tab on the left panel, and manually search or use the filters.
28 - Tell Your Story - Share Gratitude
Take the opportunity to send a thank you card or email to someone who has made an impact on you. Let gratitude help you thrive in your career!
29 - Connect With Bruins - Mentor a Bruin
The UCLA Alumni Mentor Program is a great way to connect with current students. No matter where you are in your career, you have something valuable to share. 
30 - Take Action - Work With an Expert
