The UCLA History Project

The first published history of UCLA was California of the Southland, which, not surprisingly, had substantial focus on the Berkeley Campus. In the early 1960s, Gold Shield and two prominent UCLA alumni–Andrew Hamilton ‘35, journalist and UCLA public affairs officer, and John B. Jackson ‘27, manager of the UCLA Publications Service and former executive director of the UCLA Alumni Association–wanted to write a book about UCLA’s first 50 years. Andy and Johnny did the writing; Gold Shield helped with the publication and sales. The result became the much beloved book, UCLA on the Move, published in 1969.

Later, Gold Shield, together with the Alumni Association, developed the idea, provided seed money, and performed a significant amount of research for the newest history, UCLA: The First Century, published in 2011.
