WWBC Scholarships

As part of Westwood Women Bruins Club’s mission and legacy, the organization supports annual scholarships for deserving students, frequently women returning to school after a significant hiatus, through the UCLA Alumni Scholarship Program.

One of their scholarships includes the Thelma Jonas Doane Scholarship.

Appreciating Thelma’s Gift

Thelma Marie Jonas was born in  March 2, 1906 in Los Angeles. She married Charles Watson Doane in 1936 and they made Los Angeles their home. Now Thelma Jonas Doane, she received her UCLA degree in History in 1939.

Following Thelma's death in 1984, Charles remarried and although not himself a Bruin, Charles did not forget Thelma’s love of UCLA and her involvement with the Westwood Women Bruins Club (WWBC). After he died, 30% of the Doane estate in the amount of $60,233.41 was donated in September, 1997 to the "University of California at Los Angeles Foundation for Freshman Scholarships" as an endowment.  The interest of the endowment is “to be presented annually by the Westwood Women's Bruin Club as the Thelma Jonas Doane Scholarship."

And so it has been ever since to the benefit of many WWBC scholars, including Devon Carbado, current AVC of Bruin X for Equity, Diversity and Inclusion and the Honorable Harry Pregerson professor of Law in the UCLA School of Law!
