BruinAlert™

A campuswide warning and notification system, UCLA uses BruinAlert to communicate official information during emergency or crisis situations that disrupt normal operation of the UCLA campus or threaten the health or safety of members of the campus community.

Students with a valid ucla.edu email address in the UCLA Campus Directory will automatically be enrolled in BruinAlert to receive e-mail alerts. Students can also subscribe to BruinAlert via SMS text messaging through their MyUCLA portal.

Can I sign up for BruinAlert?

BruinAlert is now accessible to parents and families. You can text “Follow @UCLABruinAlert” to the number 40404 to receive SMS text message alerts. You can also follow @UCLABruinAlert on Twitter for daily updates on campus operations. Updates and emergency information is also available through the new UCLA Bruins Safe mobile app, available through the App Store and Google Play.

Emergency tips for you and your Bruin

• Stay aware of all emergency notification and information channels (communication and advisory resources, listed here).
• Talk to your Bruin about common Southern California natural disasters, including earthquakes and wildfires.
• Students should be familiar with all emergency exits at their place of residence and keep an emergency kit including an emergency radio, flashlight and water.
• Discuss a plan for reuniting or contact after a potential on-campus or local emergency.
• Read the OEM’s page on individual emergency readiness.

Emergency Information & Campus Safety

As your student takes full advantage of the UCLA experience, it is important for us to create a safe environment for our community. Situated among some of the most well-kept neighborhoods of Los Angeles, we are one of the safest large, public campuses in the country. We encourage an environment that fosters exchange of ideas and opinions without fear of harm or disregard for fellow Bruins – this type of exchange allows for us to grow in our understanding of differing opinions and views and hopefully grow in appreciation and respect for others.

In partnership with students, parents, staff and faculty, our work with the Office of the Dean of Students and the UC Police Department helps us ensure a safe campus for your Bruin.

However, we are indeed part of a large urban community and a public campus. Individuals must do their part, in partnership with our campus, to keep themselves safe.

Safety at UCLA

The University of California Police Department (UCPD), located on campus on Westwood Boulevard, is responsible for maintaining campus safety. The department:

• Employs over 60 sworn officers, 45 civilians and 130 students to help maintain a safe environment for the community
• Officer escort services are provided in the evening to walk students from late classes, events or study sessions to their residence halls
• Assists with various other safety-related concerns, including crime reporting and prevention and lost & found.

Safety tips for your Bruin

• When on campus, in the case of an emergency, students should dial (310) 825-1491. We recommend that all students have this number programmed into their phones.
  
• When working late on campus, students should call the Escort Service at (310) 794-WALK 15 minutes before they plan to leave their current location.

• The Evening Van Service provides a safe means of transportation around campus during the evening hours: (310) 825-9800.

UCPD offers an extensive list of tips for students in various situations, including in the residence halls, in parking lots and structures, in libraries and at night.

Emergency Management

In the case of a major campus emergency or crisis, UCLA websites, including this one, will feature links to all relevant information.

Additionally, streamlining communication for potential campus emergencies and emergency preparedness, the UCLA Office of Emergency Management (OEM) posts the most current information online via their website, Facebook and Twitter.

Cost to Students

All currently enrolled UCLA students are eligible to use The Ashe Center. Students with UC Student Health Insurance Plan (UC SHIP) can utilize the majority of Ashe’s services free of cost. Students with BruinCare can utilize the core services of the Ashe Center free of charge. Students who do not have UC SHIP are still able to utilize Ashe Center services, for a small fee. Medical Emergency/Crisis

Student Health Insurance Plan

Health insurance is mandatory for all UCLA registered students and a condition of enrollment. The UC Student Health Insurance Plan (UC SHIP) is a health care program for UCLA students. The UC SHIP is a comprehensive major medical insurance plan, providing medical, prescription, counseling, vision and dental services. Students with UC SHIP are expected to seek all non-emergency care at the Ashe Center and they can be referred as needed to other network providers. Waiving SHIP

BruinCare is a program that gives students who have waived UC SHIP prepaid access to certain core services at The Ashe Center. By purchasing BruinCare, your Bruin would not have to pay the $12 visit fee or in-house lab fees, and is eligible for certain services at a reduced cost (billed directly to Bruin Bill): in-house x-rays ($5), specialist visits ($40), and more.

For only $60 per quarter, students get unlimited access to these services:

• All Ashe Primary Care Provider and Specialist visits

• Core Laboratory tests

• Core X-rays not requiring specialized equipment

UCLA Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) offers a wide variety of services for students ranging from confidential individualized therapy and psychiatric care, to therapy groups, to wellness programs providing workshops on self-management and stress management skills. Their diverse counselors and clinicians are knowledgeable in a variety of areas.

In addition to their services, CAPS also provides support for parents, including a recommended reading list and a frequently asked questions list.

Making an Appointment

Students can consult with an on-call clinician 24 hours a day, seven days a week.  If you have concerns about your Bruin, if you’d like to refer your student for CAPS services, or if you want a professional opinion regarding worrisome behaviors, please don’t hesitate to call (310) 825-0768.  CAPS can help you to handle the situation, walk you through the process of referring to CAPS, provide other relevant on-campus resources, and support you in working with a distressed or distressing student.

CAPS is open Monday-Friday, 8:00am – 5:00pm. Appointments can be made by calling (310) 825-0768 or in person; CAPS is located on the west side of John Wooden Center.

Wellness Resources

The Counseling Center has a variety of wellness resources to promote the mental well being of students at UCLA. In addition to an online mental health screening, CAPS offers a number of workshops, ranging from suicide prevention to achieving academic success. For information, explore Workshops and Trainings.

The Center for Accessible Education (CAE) provides services to meet the unique educational needs of regularly enrolled students with permanent and temporary disabilities. How to Access

Students should make an appointment with the appropriate coordinator to utilize CAE services. The CAE is located in A255 Murphy Hall and can be reached at (310) 825-1501 or via their Virtual Message Form. At the initial meeting, students will be required to complete an intake form and present current documentation of their disability.

Disability Resources

BruinAccess is a complimentary paratransit service provided by UCLA Transportation for enrolled students with temporary or permanent disabilities.

Directory of Services and Activities For Students, Staff, Faculty, Visitors, and Others with Disabilities provides a list of university resources available to individuals with disabilities.

Disabilities and Computing Program assists students, faculty and staff who have disabilities regarding computers and assistive technology services.

Library Services for Users with Disabilities provides accessibility of library materials, programs, and services to all users. Staff members working in public service areas of the campus libraries will make every effort to accommodate requests from users with disabilities.

UCLA Recreation provides adaptive programs such as kayaking, cycling, sailing, competitive wheelchair sports and accommodations in instructional classes and independent exercise.

The UCLA John Wooden Center, located in the heart of campus, features a variety of resources for your student to stay fit. Membership for all enrolled students is automatically included in your Bruin’s Student Activities Fee.

Additionally, UCLA Recreation provides extensive access to a broad range of recreational activities and services. Recreational services are offered across campus, including fields, gyms and pools.

Wooden Center Features

• 3 gyms for basketball, volleyball and badminton, and gymnastics

• Strength and Conditioning including weight training equipment, stretching mats, various cardio equipment including stationary bicycles, stairclimbers, ellipticals, treadmills, rowing machines, upperbody ergometer, and outdoor sports conditioning area. FITWELL staff available for assistance.

• 4 studios for fitness, dance, fencing, and martial arts – 3 with mirrors and hardwood floors and one with a heavy punching bag and padding on the walls and floor

• Certified Personal Fitness Trainers

• Handball, racquetball, and squash courts

• A Games Lounge with a large screen TV and tables and chairs for cards, board games, and studying

• Men’s and women’s locker rooms with showers and saunas, and lockers available for rental

• Towels and sports equipment available for checkout

• A Rock Wall designed for all levels of climbers, with dozens of indoor climbs and 15 climbing ropes (see the Open Recreation schedule)

Intramural Sports

The UCLA Intramural Sports Program consists of 30 leagues, tournaments, meets and special events with more than 8,000 participants each year. Intramural sports are Bruins competing against Bruins in an organized but casual setting. Students interested in playing a sport on campus for recreational purposes can compete in three or more different competitive levels. Students usually form teams from their residence hall floors, clubs, or fraternity/sorority. Activities are offered each quarter, including limited activities during the summer quarter. Nominal fees are charged.

Club Sports

The UCLA Club Sports Program consists of more than 30 clubs and nearly 1,500 participants. Students complete against other universities not on the Division I level, i.e. lacrosse, rugby, ultimate Frisbee, archery, badminton, sailing, cycling, etc. All clubs are administered by UCLA Recreation; however, all clubs are organized by student officers. Club dues may apply.

Adaptive Programs

UCLA Recreation provides therapeutically-based recreation adaptive programs for people with cognitive and physical disabilities that expand their access to opportunities that promote physical fitness, health and wellness, increased self-esteem and greater functional independence.

Outdoor Adventures

Outdoor Adventures provides wilderness education that is experiential and adventurous and promotes responsible stewardship of the environment and our natural resources.
